Benefits of Soy Wax Candles

What are the benefits of using a soy wax candle? How are they different from the paraffin wax candles you find in big name stores?

Many people are not aware of the dangers of paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by product and releases toxins such as: benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, acrolein and acetaldehyde. Both benzene and toluene are linked to asthma and lung cancer. The toxins paraffin wax releases are the same as those found in diesel fumes. Now ask yourself…do you want yourself and your family breathing in these toxins? Soy candles are healthier for you and are a great way to help our environment. Soy wax is a renewable, sustainable resource. Unlike paraffin wax, soy wax comes from our soybean farmers here in the USA! That’s right…you’re supporting our American farmers when you purchase a 100% soy wax candle.

When you light a paraffin candle, you may have noticed the black smoke that emits from the wick. The black smoke/soot will not only stain the candle jar, it will also stain your walls, ceiling, air vents and other areas of your home. You may experience headaches and even nausea when burning paraffin candles. Soy candles burn clean and last 30 to 50% longer than paraffin candles.

Something else to think about, don’t be fooled by “soy blend” candles. These candles still contain paraffin wax. Soy blend is just a clever mask for companies to be able to use the word “soy” in their candles. Big companies also like to say they use high grade paraffin wax…it’s still petroleum!

Lastly, but just as important, are the fragrances big companies use in their paraffin candles. The inexpensive fragrance oils many of these companies use contain an ingredient called phthalate. What are phthalates? Phthalates or phthalate esters, are esters of phthalic acid. Over the last decade or so, more and more research has been done on the effects of phthalates on human health. In addition to their status as endocrine disruptors, phthalates are linked to increased risk of breast cancer, fertility issues and other health problems. Both the U.S. and Europe have imposed laws against phthalates in children’s toys, however there are no rules against phthalates in candles.

All of the fragrance oils we use are free of phthalates. We take pride in ensuring that not only our candles, but also all of our products meet California’s proposition 65. California is the only state who has a law against harmful, cancerous chemicals. Read more about prop 65 here https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65.
